A chrysalis or nympha is the pupal stage of butterflies. The term is derived from the metallic gold-coloration found in the pupae of many butterflies referred to by the Greek term chrysós for gold. My idea of the CHURCH is that it should be like the CHRYSALIS: a palce where true transformation takes place. Unfortunately that’s not the case more often than not.

Scientific materialism is the equivalent of spiritual determinism.

Spiritual determinism is the death of the Holy Spirit. The stream of the Spirit can’t go wherever it wills, not where the wind might blow because the church has it all figured out. Certitude has done so much damage to the world and its main base is in mainline traditional orthodox churches. Surprised? 

Like the caterpillar, some time in life we are to enter into the crucible of the spirit, and allow the transforming  work have its way with us. The caterpillar doesn’t know what is happening to it when the juices begin to break down what is KNOWN (at least what’s known at the time we enter that dark night of the chrysalis).

Fortunately the caterpillar doesn’t have choice and thus a beautiful butterfly comes forth and instead of crawling on its belly, the butterfly soars! The bad news for you and I is that we have a CHOICE. It’s called FREE WILL. We can refuse the work of the Spirit and we can back out of that “dark night”. The only problem is that things now begin to get really dark and we’re usually not aware of it.

It’s called caterpillar defending or refusing to be transformed by the Spirit!
